Illinois High School Football: Class 7A Championship Preview

By Andy Schmidt
Game of the Week

There are only two championship games this weekend with undefeated teams in Illinois high school football with Class 7A being one of them as the 13-0 Glenbard West Hilltoppers face the 13-0 Lincoln-Way East Griffins on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Glenbard West slipped past Lake Zurich 19-13 in last week’s semifinal to get to this game. Lake Zurich had beat Glenbard West in last year’s playoffs. The Hilltoppers are led on offense by running back Scott Andrews, who has 1,250 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. Joe Zito has added 746 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns while quarterback Henry Haeffner has thrown for 1,715 yards on the year. Haeffner has found a favorite target in Nathan Marcus, who has 51 catches for 884 yards and seven touchdowns. Glenbard West has scored 463 points this season.

Lincoln-Way East pounded Benet Academy 37-13 in the semifinals to stay undefeated for the season. The Griffins love to run the ball with two 1,000 yard rushers led by Tommy Fuessel’s 1,502 yards and 21 touchdowns. Fuessel is also the team’s quarterback and has thrown for 1,070 yards. Nick Colangelo has 1,053 yards on the ground with 12 touchdowns. Fuessel has just 75 completions on the season with 27 of those going to Justin Corbett for 404 yards and two touchdowns. Lincoln-Way East has scored 398 points this season.

This is a battle of two rushing teams for sure which will make this game go very quickly probably with the clock always on the move. It will be a treat to see which one of these teams can run the ball better and I think that team is going to be Glenbard West. I have to think West’s slight advantage in passing will be the difference over East as well. I’ll take Glenbard West 16-13.
