Illinois High School Football: Class 4A Title Game Analysis
I waited all day to see the Class 4A title game between the Rochester Rockets and the Rock Island Alleman Pioneers knowing it was going to be the most interesting game of the day. It proved to be as Rochester quarterback Austin Green scored two first half touchdowns rushing while throwing for two more as the Rockets were hard to stop. The Pioneers were able to hang though in the opening 24 minutes with three touchdowns of their own including two touchdowns of over 45 yards. This was the game for fans that waited all day for offense with 33 points in the first quarter of play and a game that was 35-18 by halftime. With the other games on Friday, offense was at a premium most of the time.
There wasn’t much Alleman could do against Green, who finished with over 300 yards of total offense as Rochester won their third straight Class 4A title in a 43-18 win. Rochester’s high-octane offense wore out an Alleman team that had multiple players who played both ways and while Alleman did have a goal line stand in the fourth quarter, this game was over by the half. Garrett Dooley scored twice as well for Rochester, who scored over 40 points in every game this season.
I just wish Rochester would have the chance to play Montini and see what the battle of three-time defending state champions would look like. It is just one of those dream games that fans of Illinois high school football wish they could see. It was a long and tiring Friday of football with nearly 12 straight hours from start to finish. I think the time has come to rest up for Saturday morning and four more games.
