Onalaska Hilltoppers star senior Matt Thomas is without question a top basketball player in the state of Wisconsin. On Saturday Thomas has a chance to prove to everyone why he is number one in the state.

The sixth-annual NY2LA Sports Classic will be played at Homestead on Saturday in what will feature a number of top prospects in the state. One of those games will feature Thomas and the Hilltoppers (5-0) against top junior recruit Kevon Looney and the Milwaukee Hamilton Wildcats (7-0).

An Iowa State Cyclones commit, Thomas has been playing sensational this season so far. Thomas is leading the defending division 2 state champion Hilltoppers with 31.2 points per game.

What Thomas will have to do Saturday to prove that he is in fact the top player in the state is not only be the scorer that everyone knows he is, but he will have to shut down Looney and the Wildcats at the defensive end of the floor.

Thomas is not only a great scoring guard, but his stellar defense can sometimes go unnoticed because of the points he can put up. He is great at forcing turnovers and gives opposing offenses fits every game. It’s a part of his play that is somewhat underrated.

Thomas will have to play big on Saturday as not only will some of the state’s top players and teams be in attendance, but also a lot of fans from the Badger state will be watching. Containing the state’s top junior Looney and shutting down the rest of the Wildcats team will show just how well-rounded of a player Thomas can be.

If Thomas is able to get to the rim and score points and play great defense on Saturday, there will be no doubt that he will be top dog in the state of Wisconsin.
