Marquette Golden Eagles head coach Buzz Williams may not be the easiest man to please, but he should be happy with the play of two top recruits Duane Wilson and Deonte Burton.
It just so happens that Williams was in attendance Saturday to witness a showdown between Wilson’s Whitefish Bay Dominican team and Burton’s Milwaukee Vincent team in the NY2LA Sports Classic. Milwaukee Vincent defeated Dominican 74-59.
Williams also witnessed his top two recruits score a combined 67 points, 34 from Wilson and 33 from Burton. Although both star players were impressive on the offensive end of the court, Williams stresses defense and I’m sure will mention something to both Burton and Wilson. Either way it was an impressive showing for two of the top players in the state.
But it’s not just this game in which the two have been impressive.
Heading into the showdown on Saturday, Wilson was averaging 28.6 points per game all while leading the defending Division 4 state champions to a 4-2 record out of the gates. Burton has been equally impressive, not only averaging 17.8 points per game but also 11 rebounds per game. Burton has helped Vincent to a hot 5-0 record to start the season.
Both Wilson and Burton are two explosive players who can score at will. The two are also a big reason why Williams and the Golden Eagles have a top 15 recruiting class as well.
If Wilson and Burton can carry their explosive offense over to the collegiate level and step up their defensive play, I see no reason why they cannot help elevate the Golden Eagles into a top basketball program in the near future. You also can’t help to think that there is a little smirk on the face of Williams when he thinks about the future with these two players.
