DeSoto (Texas) is No. 1 in both the Xcellent 25 and Freeman high school football rankings this week.
The Eagle basketball team may have something to say about the basketball rankings before it is all said and done too.
No. 16 DeSoto knocked off No. 1 Simeon (Chicago) 67-57 in a televised showdown Thursday night. They got 23 points from Duke-bound Matt Jones and overcame the Wolverines in the second half.
Simeon and star Jabari Parker never got in a rhythm offensively and they could continue to struggle if Parker continues to have conditioning issues as he works his way back from a foot fracture. Parker finished with five points and didn’t look totally healthy yet. His teammates were unable to pick up the slack for Parker.
The Wolverines are the three-time defending Illinois 4A state champions; they had also won 63 of their last 66 games. Simeon’s last loss to a Xcellent 25-eligible team was Feb. 11, 2011 against Benet Academy (Lisle).
Junior forward Terry Maston added 15 points for the winners. Takedrick Brown (13) and Devin Wyatt (11) also finished in double figures for the Eagles.
Illinois pledge Jaylon Tate, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, led Simeon with 12 points.
DeSoto (14-1) has won nine in a row since losing to nearby Duncanville in the final of the McDonald’s Texas Invitational.
In other news, Parker has announced that he will make his college decision on December 20th and you can follow the last few developments at our Prep Sports section. Parker’s father has said his son is leaning towards either Michigan State or Duke.
