New York Mets Draft Pick Gavin Cecchini Prospect Profile
Gavin Cecchini is a big-time shortstop who appears to have all five tools. Some are more pronounced than others, but all the elements of his game are there. He has great range in the infield and a solid arm for a short stop as well. Cecchini worked the double-play this past August in tremendous fashion and already has a great feel for the infield.
As a hitter, Cecchini has a line-drive swing designed to power the ball into the outfield gaps. He needs to work on his power a bit, but not too much because it will be important for him to maintain his agility in the infield. He was nice balance at the plate as well and a well developed swing.
His older brother, Garin, was a fourth round pick in the 2010 draft. Gavin then one-upped his brother at this year’s draft by going in the first round to the New York Mets. Talk about family bragging rights.
“Gavin’s a very dynamic player,” said Ole Miss assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty, “He’s a guy that comes in and makes an immediate impact on a program. He influences the game on both sides of the ball with his bat offensively and certainly with his glove at the shortstop position.”
The infielder was named a Class 5A All-State selection and the Gatorade Player of the Year for Louisiana. He is also the top ranked shortstop of his class according to ESPN. We’ll see if he can one day hold down a major league infield.
