Joel Berry apparently had a very good weekend visiting Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Lake Highland Prep junior made his one and only official college visit this Saturday.
“I told everybody North Carolina was my dream school all during my recruiting process,” Berry told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday. “Now I get to fulfill my dream.”
Berry apparently called Head Coach Roy Williams before practice on Monday to give him the good news. Williams was apparently one of the big draws, but so were his fellow players and the school.
“Their coaching staff is the best in the world I believe,” Berry said. “The school is amazing. The players are amazing. My parents liked what coach Williams had to say to me and to them. Everything was good. After the weekend was over, I just knew North Carolina was the school for me.”
Berry had other official visits planned, but when he was asked if he would go on the other visits he said “I don’t think so. I think that was first and last.”
Berry watched the UNC Tar Heels beat Maryland 62-52 Saturday, and the school’s student section started chanting Joel and Berry during team timeouts. Roy Williams, I’m sure, appreciates the gesture shown by the Tar Heel faithful and it did not go unnoticed by Berry.
“I don’t really look for attention on me, but that gave me chills,” Berry said.
Maybe Berry can return the favor and give the fans some chills with his smooth game in two years.
