Xavier Rathan-Mayes recently dropped 55 in a Huntington Prep (WV) victory. Prep Sports own Robert White already wrote an excellent article about this young man who stepped in after Andrew Wiggins went down with a hit to the head; I found some video of the game on youtube and wanted to offer a bit of commentary on it.
He is a player who has a subtle touch around the rim and his behind the back move at the :20 mark is a thing of beauty. He has an excellent three point release and he unloads a barrage of threes in the :40 range. He also has great touch around the rim and finishes after the foul at the 1:10 mark. Rathan-Mayes is also a willing passer and it is no wonder Huntington Prep has had success this season given Wiggins and Rathan-Mayes’ respective games.
Rathan-Mayes is a Canadian like Wiggins and he thinks they both have made more Americans stand up and notice the improving Canadian game.
“The past few years, American people haven’t really respected our game and I think these last two AAU seasons we’ve definitely made a statement being ranked number two two years ago and all through last year being ranked number one,” Rathan-Mayes said in an interview with SportsNet. “I think we’re gaining everyone’s attention and respect. Canada Basketball is no joke.”
Canada basketball definitely is not a joke, and both Huntington Prep stars will show that at the next level.
