Bobby Portis,a Senior forward, out of Hall (Little Rock, Ark.) is the favorite to win the Gatorade Basketball Player of his state.
The 6-foot-9 forward recently led Hall to its fourth straight state title this year in a 34-33 barn burner. He accumulated 10 points and an astonishing 17 rebounds in the Class 6A finale.
Portis averaged 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.8 blocked shots per game this year and he will be at the McDonald’s All American game on April 3rd. The game is in Chicago at the United Center.
Portis is the sixth ranked power forward in the 2013 college basketball recruiting class and he will be an Arkansas Razorback next year. He will be a go to player for the team immediately, bringing his aggressive scoring mentality and tenacious rebounding to the team. Arkansas was wise to hone in on their home state product before he could drum up interest from some of the other top basketball programs.
He needs to improve his three point range at the next level, but he already has a nice post game to go along with a pretty nice ball handle for a power forward as well. He also needs to improve the impact he has defensively on the floor, and if he can do that then he might win SEC freshman of the year. It wouldn’t shock me, that’s for sure.
