Well, the National High School Invitational started off with a real bang. In a game that went to overtime and also featured a half time buzzer beater. Prime Prep overcame Blanche Ely after a miscommunication on the Tigers bench. With the score tied, coach Melvin Randall called a timeout in overtime with 12.3 seconds left.
The only problem? The team had no timeouts left and Prime was awarded two free throws and the ball. Game over.
When asked what went through his mind when awarded the free throws, Prime Head coach Ray Forsett said “thank you Jesus.” You can see it in the video above as well.
“That’s a tough break for them, but it’s survive and advance right now. We got to guard better”
Blanche Ely was feisty on defense in the first half and a 3 pointer with only seconds to go in the half put the game within one point, but then Emmanuel Mudiay hit a buzzer beater from from far and gave the Prime a four point lead going into the half.
Forsett admitted that it helped sway the momentum back in their favor and kept his team’s confidence up.
Mudiay struggled overall in the game, compared to his usual brilliance, committing 5 turnovers and only 10 points, but he will come out ready to roll tomorrow. His coach made sure the media knew that he would be grilling his point guard over the next day.
The game was chippy with a fair amount of fouls, but remained close at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland. Stay tuned all weekend for more coverage of NHSI; semifinals coming up tomorrow!
