Connecticut Huskies Breanna Stewart Will Be Multiple Championship Winner
Well, now the world knows who Breanna Stewart is. She was just the Most Outsanding Player of women’s March Madness and keyed her Connecticut Huskies to their eighth national championship. When I interviewed Stewart last year after she had won the Gatorade National Girls High School Athlete of the Year, I was struck with her intelligence and poise. Although, I didn’t expect immediate success for her, I certainly expected it to come at some point. When she was struggling to start the year I fully expected her to get out of her funk by the end of the year. Well, she certainly seemed to make that happen and then some.
“Every player, especially young players, deal with things differently,” head coach Geno Auriemma said. “And I think when the season ended, it just let the air out of the balloon and she said, ‘Now I just want to play basketball.’ My God, she was amazing tonight.”
Now that Stewart has found her confidence she will carry that into the rest of her college carerr and she will have multiple championships at Connecticut before she is finished. Think about it. Next year, she won’t even have that pesky freak of nature Brittany Griner standing in her path. Good luck to Stewart and hope she enjoys her summer after having a truly fantastic spring.
