Andrew Wiggins is such a rare breed. He is a budding basketball superstar who appears to love the game, but sometimes dislike the attention that comes with it a la Derrick Rose. His current head coach thinks that eventually he is going to have to learn to tell people “no”.
“It’s weird to me because we’ve recruited other good players before, but we haven’t recruited anyone with this type of attention,” Bill Self said to USAToday. “I kind of feel for him; he’s going to have to tell people no. He’s gotta be able to be a kid. He hasn’t even made a basket yet, and the attention he’s received is based on potential. I think he should welcome expectations, there’s no reason for him to run from them because he’s going to have them no matter what.”
The expectations for Wiggins will be a national championship and no one will be more pleased than Self if Wiggins is able to make that happen for this team. Self must still be pinching himself that Wiggins picked his team and we will just have to see what the results of next season are.
