Andrew Wiggins Named Gatorade High School Boys Athlete of the Year

Rant Sports- Dave Daniels

I did not have a prediction for Gatorade’s high school girls athlete of the year this time around, but I’ve held for some time that Andrew Wiggins would win the high school boys athlete of the year award and that came to pass last night in West Hollywood.

Stay tuned tomorrow for my post show interview with Wiggins where we talk Gatorade, Canadian basketball, and how he hopes to be the number one pick in next year’s draft. Wiggins will be playing for the Kansas Jayhawks next year and some have called him he second coming of Kevin Durant into college. I think a more appropriate comparison is Tracy McGrady, but McGrady did not play in college so we don’t have firm numbers that we can use in that comparison. Wiggins had a change to talk to Paul George at dinner as well and I’m sure he learned a lot from the talented wing player.

Had a chance to speak with Wiggins father after the show briefly and that conversation will stay off the record, but I will say that Mitchell Wiggins is an excellent father who gave all the credit to his wife and Andrew’s mother when I praised him for raising such a fantastic young man. Keep an eye out for my interview with Wiggins as well as Paul George and some other Gatorade presenters later this week.
