Duke Blue Devils commit Jahlil Okafor recently showed out on national television with a huge win for Whitney Young (IL) over Apple Valley (MN), but amazingly the center was not satisfied completely with his own effort. That is absured, because based on what was seen he was by far the best player on the floor and that is written with all due respect to future teammate Tyus Jones.
Okafor is a true competitor though, and that is why he continues to nit-pick his own play.
“He wants to be first in just about everything,” said teammate Paul White in a recent excellent Chicago Magazine piece on Okafor.”First in running laps. First one out onto the court. First one done eating.”
Really loved as well what White said about the way Okafor’s trash talk hits you in the heart; that is the sign of a psychological competitor and someone whose entire being is driven to win. Sometimes Okafor even carries over the trash-talk into practice.
“He’s one of the best trash-talkers I’ve ever been around,” White added. “He gets in your head, down to your core. Even during practice. It’s like, ‘Oh, damn, man, I’m your teammate.’ ”
Amazing stuff really, and if you missed the piece yesterday then do yourself a favor today.

Stay tuned here at Rant Sports Prep for updates on Okafor’s journey towards a possible state title. His way was blocked the last three seasons by Jabari Parker, so this just might be the year for the Dolphins and the humble and yet driven Okafor.
