Have had Gatorade on the brain today thanks to Peyton Manning breaking the single season passing touchdowns record. So have been thinking about Jahlil Okafor’s early season play, and how it may be the early case for a Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year campaign.
Thanks to the tweet below for making me think of this a bit more, and you can read that here.
Not only does Duke recruit the best players, but the best students as well. Can't wait to see @BigJah22 in blue next year!

Okafor committed to the Duke Blue Devils in November at a press conference at Whitney Young (IL) High School; the cool part was that an identical press conference (in an empty room) was taking place in Minnesota for point guard Tyus Jones. Jones is another player who will be in the running as well, but wonder if his lack of huge rebounding numbers would count against him at all. If he leads Apple Valley (IL) to another state title, then he will have made quite a name for himself up there.
Okafor also has excellent grades and enjoys reading, which definitely helps his case because Gatorade athletes have to hit a certain academic standard. Will keep an eye on who the frontrunners are as the year goes on, and it should be interesting to see how things play out as the season becomes tougher.
My track record has been okay so far when picking these for anybody out there keeping track, but have never claimed to have omnipotent either so do please do not hate. That is all for Prep today, but as always for you some fortune cookie wisdom.
