The Penn State Nittany Lions moved up into the top five recruiting rankings for the class of 2015 on Monday after they reeled in their top recruit in 4-star athlete Juwan Johnson.
Johnson is rated as the 13th-best athlete in the country and the No. 2 overall player in the state of New Jersey for 2015. Johnson’s commitment to the Nittany Lions bumped the class up three spots to No. 5 overall in the nation and first overall in the Big-10.
Head coach James Franklin has yet to coach a game in Happy Valley, but he has been able to carry over his great recruiting abilities from Vanderbilt to Penn State.
The current Penn State 2015 recruiting class has eight overall verbal commitments with four of those being of 4-star status. Johnson is the top recruit in the class followed by running back Andre Robinson, who is the 14th overall back in the nation. The Nittany Lions also have another 4-star athlete and running back committed in the class in Kamonte Carter and Saquon Barkley. Also on the offensive side of the ball is 4-star offensive lineman Ryan Bates.
On the defensive side, the Nittany Lions have three commitments, all of which are the only 3-star players in the class in defensive end Ryan Buchholtz, inside linebacker Jake Cooper and safety Jarvis Miller.
Penn State is still under NCAA probation for violations under former head coach Joe Paterno, but by bringing in Franklin, the Nittany Lions are going to be poised to make a run at the Big-10 championship once the sanctions are lifted if they continue to recruit this well.
