Jahlil Okafor was named the USA TODAY Sports player of the year and he did a brief interview with them about some of the best moments of his high school career.
The Whitney Young (IL) center will enter his college career with a world of confidence after winning a state title and also collecting the Morgan Wootten player of the year award. The Duke Blue Devils are getting their best young big man since Elton Brand, and the championship expectation meter will be set on to full from the start of the year. You might be surprised who Okafor’s game gets compared to at times.
“Some people say DeMarcus Cousins,” Okafor said to USA TODAY Sports. “My favorite big men were old-school guys like Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal and Tim Duncan.”
If he keeps looking up to players like that, then we could be looking at a big man who shifts the focus of the game back to the low block. One thing seems quite clear; you might want to keep an eye on those pesky Blue Devils next season. They will have a bit more experience than this year’s young John Calipari squad, but the hype will be on a similar level from the start of the year. The rumors that Coach Cal might run to LaLa Land sure has Big Blue Nation scared on twitter, and you can bet that I am a fan of anything that causes twitter-fear.
Up next for Okafor is the Jordan Brand Classic, and you should definitely tune in for that one. Thanks as always.
