Chris Jericho Kicks Brazilian Flag; Suspended by WWE
This is apparently a really big deal in Brazil, in fact it’s a jailable offense. Jericho reportedly escaped the arena and flew out of the country immediately following the incident.
Here is the official statement from WWE.com:
“Chris Jericho has been suspended for 30 days due to an irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE live event in São Paulo on May 24. WWE has apologized to the citizens and the government of Brazil for this incident.”
Jericho responded with this:
“I made a bad judgment call in the course of entertaining WWE fans in Brazil. I apologized to the people in the crowd for showing disrespect.”
“It was a bad move,” Jericho said. “I did it with (our) fans’ entertainment in mind and I’ll accept the consequences for that.”
In my opinion, Jericho was doing nothing more than doing his job. Jericho is a heel, he was doing what heels are supposed to do… antagonize the fans.
If the people of Brazil are truly offended by this, I can respect that. It’s your country, and if kicking flags at a pro wrestling event is not okay, that’s fine, but they need understand that Jericho was merely performing.
As with anything on WWE.com, you have to take it with a grain of salt, but in this day and age, I could see this being real.
Shawn Michaels had his way with the Canadian flag a couple times back in the day. Michaels however, was not suspended for his actions. Perhaps Canada has a different view on denigrating flags or maybe the times have just changed…
