Chael Sonnen seems more like a WWE wrestler than a UFC fighter. Let’s look at it this way. He is a shameless self-promoter, he can have fans turn on him in an instant and he plays a perfect heel. Sounds like pro wrestling to me, which is why the biggest company wants to bring him in.
F4Wonline.com is reporting WWE is interested in working with UFC fighter Chael Sonnen.
Sonnen, who suffered a loss to Anderson Silva on Saturday night, is being targeted by WWE to get involved in some fashion. There is no indication if WWE wants the 35 year-old fighter to wrestle or have another role.
This move would make sense for the company considering Chael Sonnen is good friends with CM Punk, who is only one of the most important people in the company. He is also close with Stone Cold Steve Austin, which has the idea wheel in my brain spinning.
There is no timetable for the potential debut of Sonnen, so let us fast forward to Wrestlemania 29. A lot of people are pining for a Punk v. Austin match on the biggest stage of them all. Why not throw Sonnen in as a special guest referee? You could play up the friendship between Sonnen and the two men. You could say the fight would be too hard for a regular ref to control so bring in a guy that will not back down.
Does it need some more fleshing out? Of course it does, but I think that is a good direction for the company take. Hell, this is probably better than what they would use him for. Too often the company uses a big name for the sake of using one. If you are going to bring in Chael Sonnen, you need to use him to further a story. Reffing a Punk-Austin showdown would be the thing.
