During this week’s WWE TV tapings, it was announced that Raw is going to kick off 2013 with a bang. The long awaited CM Punk vs. Ryback TLC match will finally happen and it will be for the WWE Championship title.
This is Ryback’s first chance to face Punk one-on-one for the WWE Title in three long months. Their first encounter occurred at the Hell in a Cell PPV when Ryback was close to winning his first ever championship in the company. Alas, this match ended in controversy when faux referee Brad Maddox let Punk win by hitting him below the belt.
A proper rematch never happened between the two because John Cena got involved at the Survivor Series. Ryback lost his chance at winning the title again because “The Shield” made their debut and allowed Punk to win yet again.
Ryback’s chance was supposed to occur at the TLC PPV, but Punk needed emergency surgery to heal up a niggling knee injury he’d been suffering throughout 2012.
Punk’s knee is now fit and ready for him to compete and it will be the TLC match that the WWE promised would happen at the actual TLC PPV a few weeks ago.
WWE is hoping this Raw show will give a kick start to the ratings in 2013. The latter stages of the ratings in 2012 have been very poor as they have not been this low since 1997. With The Rock wrestling at the Royal Rumble in January and WrestleMania 29 around the corner, the company should hope a match like this will interest fans.
