Last night at the Smackdown Tapings live from Miami, Florida, not only was the buzz of The Rock making his return to his flagship show in the air, but the fans went home having witnessed history. Alberto Del Rio challenged The Big Show in a last stating match for Big Show’s World Heavyweight Championship. And in a very rare direction, Alberto Del Rio defeats The Big Show to win the belt in front of the Miami crowd.

The last time that Alberto Del Rio wore WWE Gold was back at the 2011 Survivor Series, when CM Punk defeated him to win the WWE Championship (the same title that Punk has right now, and has for over a year). This will be Alberto Del Rio’s first World Heavyweight Championship title run, as rumors stated that he was supposed to win the belt at Wrestlemania 27 against then champion, Edge. Del Rio won the 2011 40 man Royal Rumble to win the rights to meet the World Champion at Wrestlemania, but was not successful, since this was Edge’s final tour before his retirement.

Del Rio has had a turn around in his in ring career since he has been turned into a face wrestler (good guy). The turn was actually an appropriate fit for him since his manager Ricardo, is incredibly popular with the WWE Universe and has a cult fan base. Del Rio as a face and as the World Champion is going to be a new direction for him and gives him a fresh start. It will be interesting and exciting to see what the aristocrat will be able to do with this title run.
