Papa Shango Royal Rumble

Wade Barrett tweeted something interesting the other day suggesting that a popular former WWE star will be making an appearance at the Royal Rumble match this Sunday.

Here’s what he tweeted:

“Just bumped into Papa Shango at Hooters. Told me he’s entering the @WWE #RoyalRumble this year. Can’t wait, one of my faves.”

This is a gimmick that was used by Charles Wright (who plays the Shango character) back in the ’90s. Wright usually made a special appearance to the WWE under his “The Godfather” persona. He would enter the arena with a bunch of attractive women which ring announcer and WWE legend Jerry Lawler likes to call the “Ho Train”.

I guess “The Godfather” character will not work appropriately under WWE’s current PG rating. To my knowledge, this will be the first time that Wright will wrestle under the Papa Shango gimmick in many years. The Godfather gimmick was more popular and well known as it was used during the golden years of the Attitude Era.

It’s unknown if Barrett is actually telling the truth or not with this tweet. Many people have noted that he tweeted the exact same thing last year and we did not see Shango make an appearance in the Royal Rumble match at all.

As of now, these are the 23 people that have already officially entered the Royal Rumble: John Cena, Sheamus, Darren Young, Titus O’Neil, Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Antonio Cesaro, Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, Drew McIntyre, Wade Barrett, Kane, Daniel Bryan, Kofi Kingston, Brodus Clay, The Great Khali, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Michael McGillicutty, Cody Rhodes, Ryback, Damien Sandow

There are seven spaces left in the Royal Rumble match. This leaves the door open for more special guests to hopefully make a one night only appearance.
