If you have not heard already, John Cena became the only fourth man in history to win the Royal Rumble match more than once. He first won the match for the first time back in 2008 when he was the final entrant at number 30.
You could say that this year’s Royal Rumble match was full of some surprises, but the end result was very predictable. Many people assumed WWE was planning for Cena to win the match to face The Rock for the WWE Title at WrestleMania 29. Sometimes WWE throws fans off by staging last minute decisions, as in last year when Sheamus won the Rumble because too many people predicted Chris Jericho would win. It appears the company played it safe this year by letting Cena win.
Speaking of Jericho, he made a one night only appearance by entering at number two in this match. Both he and Dolph Ziggler lasted the longest in the match before they were eliminated. Ziggler eliminated Jericho while Ziggler was tossed out by Sheamus, who was one of the final three wrestlers in the ring with Ryback and Cena.
As stated, it seemed WWE was playing it safe by letting Cena win the Rumble. In the past, Rumble winners were new stars that the company would promote in the match to make to even bigger stars. Thanks to the huge buyrate that WrestleMania 28 earned last year, it looks like Vince McMahon feels as if Cena and The Rock can draw a similar number for this year’s WrestleMania. The only difference is that this year’s rematch will be for the WWE Championship.
