The Hollywood Reporter has reported that former WWE Superstar Batista has landed a pretty big role in an upcoming movie from Marvel.
Batista (Dave Bautista) will play the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. This is a huge role for the former wrestler. His character will have a huge part in the movie, plus there is a chance he might appear in The Avengers 2 as well. This is because Batista’s character was killed by Thanos (main villain of The Avengers 2). Since this is a comic book story, his character is able to be resurrected in order to get his revenge.
Most Marvel movies released these days are linked with one another, so hopefully wrestling fans might see Batista star in more movies. This is a very huge break for Batista since most professional wrestlers (apart from The Rock) only get cast as henchmen in films. If wrestlers are in the main role, they’re usually movies produced by WWE Studios or released straight to DVD/Blu-ray.
Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t out until 2014, but wrestling fans do have a chance to see Batista in another movie out later this year, as he is also starring in Riddick, which features Vin Diesel. That movie opens nationwide on September 6, 2013.
It will be interesting to see if Batista can keep the momentum going and land even more significant roles in Hollywood much like Rock has done. Some wrestlers struggle to find a successful career after they retire, but it looks like Batista’s future is looking very bright.
