WWE: Has The Rock’s Absence Affected Raw Ratings?
The Rock is the current WWE Champion and is without a doubt the most popular wrestler right now. Sadly though, it appears his Hollywood commitments have caused a dramatic decrease in Raw ratings. Rock has been unable to appear on Raw for the past two weeks because he was overseas promoting the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation movie.
Rock’s absence last week was not felt too much because the main focus of the show was about the Undertaker‘s beef with CM Punk. The Raw show posted a healthy 3.54 rating averaging 4.81 million viewers.
This week’s Raw show dropped dramatically to a 3.09 rating averaging only 4.26 million viewers. These have been the worst ratings that Raw has earned in several weeks.
The low ratings is a combination of a lot of things, but it could rest solely on the absence of Rock two weeks in a row. Attitude era fans love to see him, and are unlikely to tune into Raw just to see John Cena and company. People that love Rock from his movie fame are unlikely to watch Raw only to see the current wrestlers either.
Another contributing factor to the poor ratings is due to the bad booking of Brock Lesnar lately. Lesnar (like Rock) only wrestles in PPV events. It would be more interesting for viewers if Lesnar actually competed in a warm-up match on Raw.
Unlike Rock however, Lesnar’s more recent appearances have been short and pointless. He just comes to the ring to beat up a couple of guys without saying a word.
Lesnar’s appearances last year were more intriguing because he got to talk on the microphone more. This year however, Paul Heyman does all of the talking for him.
Next week’s Raw should see higher ratings. Rock will be back, and it will only be two more weeks until WrestleMania 29.
