The WWE revealed it will stage a “Three Stages of Hell” match for the first time in many years at the next PPV event called “Payback.”
The WWE Title match between John Cena and Ryback has been upgraded since last week’s Raw. Their match was initially going to be an “Ambulance Match” only, but was changed to the rare “Three Stages of Hell.”
This match type is a three out of falls type match, although each contest has a different stipulation. For Ryback vs. Cena, there will not be a simple singles match. They will contest in a Lumberjack, Tables and Ambulance match. These types of matches are usually exciting to watch and are usually very long too.
The first Three Stages of Hell match occurred back in February 2001. It was the final encounter between Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin. They contested in a Singles, Street Fight and Cage match. The match lasted for around 45 minutes and was one of the best matches that I’ve ever seen. Triple H won the match, but both men were exhausted at the end of it.
The next one was held in 2002 and involved Triple H and Shawn Michaels. They competed in a Street Fight, Steel Cage and a Ladder match. I did not think this match was exciting as the first one, but it was still very long and entertaining at times when the paced quickened.
The latest Three Stages of Hell match occurred in 2009 and was a contest between Randy Orton and Triple H. They had a Singles, Falls Counts Anywhere and Stretcher match. In my opinion, this one was the most disappointing. This is mainly because of outside interference and the “PG” rating that toned down the violence.
Hopefully, Cena and Ryback won’t disappoint at WWE Payback.
