CM Punk made his triumphant return to the WWE at the Payback PPV. He made a memorable return that will be talked about for years to come.
This is because his comeback match against Chris Jericho may have been the best match he’s ever competed in.
Jericho and Punk faced each other several times last year. Their match at WrestleMania 28 was solid, as was their encounter at Extreme Rules. However, their match at Payback seemed more special. They were allocated much more time and had more freedom to wrestle as long as they could. This resulted in what is potentially going to be the best match of 2013.
The main thing that made this match extra special is because it was in Punk’s hometown of Chicago, which is one of the best professional wrestling crowds of all time as they are always vocal. At the Payback PPV, their support for Punk was deafening. Not since Money in the Bank 2011 has Punk received such a loud response.
Another thing that made this match special is that the match itself was clean. Punk won fair and square without cheating or getting help from Paul Heyman in any way. It truly was a contest between the two best wrestlers today.
As much as I loved Punk vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29, Jericho and Punk surpassed it in my opinion. The amount of drama and technical wrestling involved in that match is something I had not seen in many years.
It will be interesting to see who Punk feuds with next. Hopefully a rematch against Jericho is on the cards, but Jericho might be taking another break (again) to work with his band Fozzy.
