AJ Styles cut a promo on Impact Wrestling in which he stated that he was “better than the best in the world”. There is no doubting that the TNA Wrestling star was making reference to WWE Superstar CM Punk. However, what might not be so clear is Styles’ true agenda for including the comment in his promo. Was Styles doing what was best for business or was he going into business for himself? I believe he is attempting to land a spot in WWE by creating demand for a high profile match against Punk at WrestleMania 30.
It is no secret to most pro wrestling fans that there are currently some contract issues between TNA and Styles. It is also no secret that TNA is having financial difficulties that have resulted in many talent cuts in recent months. The 36-year-old Styles has a few months left on his TNA contract and should be looking for a big pay off. Will TNA be able to afford Styles given their financial difficulties of late? I believe Styles knows the answer to that question, and that is why he referenced Punk during his promo. If Styles can create demand for a CM Punk vs AJ Styles match now then he would be a valued acquisition for WWE if he becomes a free agent.
I believe Punk vs Styles will happen at WrestleMania. WWE has yet to acquire a major TNA talent, but sooner or later they are going to do just that. The timing is going to be just right for this to happen. Styles’ contract will expire just in time for a WrestleMania storyline. WWE is going to want to make WrestleMania as grand an event as possible, and I think the temptation to acquire Styles will be too great for WWE to ignore. No matter the outcome, the next few months will be very interesting as the clock could be ticking on the TNA career of AJ Styles.
