Impact Wrestling Is Home To Failing Factions: Aces and 8s, Main Event Mafia

His name is Bully Ray and he is the President of Aces and 8s. Am I supposed to be impressed that Ray is leading the likes of KnuxGarett Bischoff and Wes Brisco into battle each and every week on Impact Wrestling? Aces and 8s were supposedly such a threat to TNA Wrestling that Sting reunited his family, the Main Event Mafia. The original Mafia had some heavy hitters in the lineup, such as Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and Booker T. The current MEM lineup includes Sting, Samoa Joe, Magnus and Rampage Jackson. I don’t think this group is much better than the weak Aces and 8s. I am a huge fan of factions in professional wrestling; I loved groups like the nWo, Degeneration X and the Four Horsemen. However, the two big factions residing in TNA are just not very good. Both groups lack the needed ingredients to be successful factions.

In a nutshell, Aces and 8s are Ray, Mr.Anderson and a bunch of jobbers. I’m just not buying that this group is a serious threat to law and order in TNA. In recent weeks, MMA star Tito Ortiz and Brooke Tessmacher have been added to the group which, in my opinion, does not address the root problem. Aces and 8s needs a more formidable lineup. Why not trim some of that jobber fat and add guys like James Storm, Gunner and Jay Bradley? I believe these additions are good fits and, at the very least, would shake things up a bit.

The Main Event Mafia have been victims of a bad circumstance in addition to having an odd roster choice. Sting and Kurt Angle as co-leaders of the group were good choices; Angle landing in rehab was just a bad circumstance. However, I do believe Magnus was an ill-advised choice for inclusion in the group. The Mafia are supposed to be the elite, and Magnus hasn’t proven that he is more than a mid-card talent. I don’t have a problem with Jackson being in the group, as long as it is in the role of a body guard. With all that said, I think a superior Mafia lineup would be Sting, Joe, AJ Styles and Austin Aries . I feel this lineup would have talent depth and would create potential for more interesting angles in the future.

I believe the Aces and 8s vs. Main Event Mafia angle could be salvageable, but TNA needs to add new blood to both sides. I think it’s inevitable, because both groups are so obviously weak. It will remain to be seen if TNA inserts the correct players into the correct lineups.
