Ric Flair has been recognized as the most decorated World Champion in professional wrestling history, and he’s about to be overtaken by John Cena.
Flair won 16 World Championships in WWE, WCW and NWA. Nobody has yet to beat this record. For a time, I thought Triple H would beat the record, but he has stopped wrestling full time. His record stands at 13 championship reigns. Hulk Hogan is up there too with 12 World Title reigns under his belt.
Edge is one wrestler that could have added more reigns to his resume. He retired in 2011, but managed to snag 11 championships. Randy Orton is also at 11 title reigns, and he could overtake Triple H and Hogan one day.
As for Cena, he’s now a 14-time World Champion and he’s only 36-years-old. He’s been on the main event scene for close to nine years now and it doesn’t appear as though he’ll be retiring anytime soon. Cena could become the longest main event wrestler in WWE history. Hogan was a main event star in WWE for nine years until he left for WCW. Stone Cold Steve Austin‘s career was cut short due to injury, while Hollywood made the Rock semi-retire from professional wrestling altogether.
Cena is still popular, and WWE has no plans of not booking him in matches that don’t involve either the WWE or World Heavyweight Titles anytime soon. I’m guessing in the next year or two, it’s very likely that Cena will become the most decorated World Champion in professional wrestling history. This is either a good or bad thing depending on what you think of the man.
