CM Punk made waves a few weeks back when he decided to abruptly leave WWE. It happened the night after Royal Rumble, which lead many to believe his exit was the result of the poor booking for Daniel Byran. But as more time has passed, it’s seeming more and more likely that Punk was just fed up with WWE in general.
The truth is that only a few people really know what’s going on between Punk and WWE. Two of those people figure to be Punk himself and Vince McMahon. Outside of that, I’d be shocked if more than a handful of people know the real story. But now it seems there’s more to the story.
PWInsider is reporting that Punk has been granted his release from the company. This was apparently the word backstage at this past weekend’s live events and if it’s true, it really wouldn’t be that shocking. Punk’s contract was going to expire in July anyways, so I wouldn’t put it past Vince to just call it a day and release Punk early, if indeed that’s what he wanted.
Sure, it sucks that the BITW won’t be at Wrestlemania 30, and I’m sure WWE would have liked to have him on the card, but it’s an event that’s going to sell itself. The company might lose a few buys or network subscriptions because Punk isn’t around, but it’s not a big enough number for them to really care.
My guess is that Punk was going to leave the company in July regardless of what happened this year at Mania, so Vince just decided to cut ties now and move on.
Is this all a big work? Its seeming less and less likely by the day. If this is a work, it will go down as one of the best ever if Punk makes a surprise return in the near future. However, fans of the BITW shouldn’t hold their breath.
