WWE is all about celebrity-athlete appearances. With SummerSlam, the second biggest show of the year, just a couple months away, rumors are already starting to swirl in regards to who could appear at the event on August 17th from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
According to a report on Wrestlezone via the Wrestling Observer, Ronda Rousey is on the short list of celebrity-athletes to appear at this year’s summer spectacular. It’s being rumored that she would appear as part of the Four Horsewomen of MMA, which also includes Shayna Baszler, Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke.
If Dana White gives the okay for Rousey to appear at SS this year and her schedule is open, it seems likely she’d do it. She’s acknowledged her love for pro wrestling in past, and she even uses the ‘Rowdy’ moniker made famous by Roddy Piper. In interviews she’s used terminology like ‘heel’ and has said that she enjoys playing the role of the bad girl.
With WWE’s recent financial struggles, they need to do anything possible to gain more viewers and network subscriptions. Branching out to bring in people like the UFC’s women’s champion is exactly the type of thing to get more eyeballs on the product.
As far as Rousey getting physically involved at SS — it’s unlikely. Maybe a quick segment where she ‘punches’ someone is possible, but there’s no way White would risk one of his top stars getting hurt at a fake wrestling event.
Stay tuned, as Ronda Rousey at SummerSlam 2014 seems like a real possibility.
