At this point it doesn’t seem like a matter of if Brock Lesnar will be in the main event of SummerSlam. It appears to be a matter of who he will face for the WWE title.
According to the latest update from the Wrestling Observer, Lesnar will not be working with Daniel Bryan at this year’s SS. Many have had that match penciled in for weeks now, but you have to believe that Bryan’s neck injury has thrown booking off a tad. But apparently even if he’s healthy, he won’t be squaring off with Lesnar in August at the Staples Center.
So, who will it be? Who will have the title heading into SS, and who will The Beast challenge?
One popular name being kicked around is none other than John Cena. As much as some fans will hate to hear his name mentioned as the next WWE title holder, there are worse options.
Cena is definitely one of the favorites to win the title at Money In the Bank. If WWE doesn’t want to experiment with a younger star holding the title, their safe move is just to put the strap back on Cena again. If he does win it at MITB, you have to believe he’ll hold the title to at least SS.
After Battleground Lesnar could come out and challenge Cena to not only a title match, but a rematch. If you’ll remember the two squared off just over two years ago at Extreme Rules 2012.
There’s more money to be made off of Cena vs. Lesnar II. It would draw in casual fans, and the ante would be upped this time around by the title. Would it be the greatest SS main event? Probably not. But it’s one that fits the bill in 2014.
