Last week on Monday Night RAW, the Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon storyline continued with a “shocking” revelation. Daniel Bryan, who has been working for hours every day rehabbing to get back to the ring, has been cheating on his wife with his personal trainer! It is likely that the only person defending the completely unnecessary and ridiculous story is Stephanie herself, as the segment and idea as a whole has been panned by everybody with a mouth or a keyboard.
Why was it important to add an extraneous and useless domestic angle into the mix? When Stephanie brought out the cops and had Brie arrested I felt better, because I was expecting McMahon to reveal that it was just a big ruse all set up just to have Brie slap the woman who claimed to be cavorting with her husband. Brie was hit with an assault charge and took the perp walk to jail, allowing Stephanie to get back at her for doing the same a couple weeks prior.
Of course the other alternative (and the absolute only other alternative) is that Stephanie made the entire thing up just to get into Brie’s head and throw her off, making it easier to defeat one-half of the Bella Twins at SummerSlam. Tell a woman her new husband is cheating on her and send her to jail for slapping that woman? That is a classic case of mind-games. I don’t have a lot of hope that the story will play out in that manner, but if it does then I revoke all of my criticism.
In a recent interview with IGN, Daniel Bryan, the accused cheater, responded to a question that asked what he thought of the “interesting” segment. His reply:
“Wait, by ‘interesting,’ do you mean ‘stupid’? [Laughs]…Yeah, to me, it’s groan-worthy. I don’t think it added anything to the story. It was just like, ‘Ugh!’”
That definitely appears to be the general consensus, but in the end it’s going to conclude as barely a footnote. Bryan doesn’t intend to show up on WWE television until he’s able to get back in the ring and wrestle, and that is going to take a lot of rehabilitation and fornication with a personal trainer.
