It is safe to say, in my estimation, that even though Kurt Angle has been in TNA for eight of his 15 years as a wrestler, people still look at him and see a WWE guy who has been wrestling “where the little boys play” for so long that he barely even shows up on their radar. He has done a number of absolutely outstanding things in TNA — as much as he did when he was part of Vince McMahon’s company if not possibly surpassing that greatness within the confines of the 6-and-4-sided TNA rings.
Over the last few months stories have come about claiming that Angle has contacted WWE about returning once his contract with TNA expires. Triple H, in charge of all things talent relations, turned him down for reasons unknown, but one reason, and possibly the main one, is his very poor history with drugs and alcohol. He has endangered the lives of himself and others and embarrassed himself (and to a lesser extent TNA, because they’re good at doing so on their own) with irrational drunken Twitter posts that are deleted followed by claims that he was hacked. Apparently he has no idea how to change his password; somebody should send him a tutorial. Angle even tried to go over Triple H’s head and reached out to Vince McMahon, who allegedly told him to shove it at an uncomfortable angle (wordplay humor!) and stated that Triple H makes talent decisions.
All of this said, is there a chance that we might one day see Angle back in a WWE ring? I believe that yes, indeed there is. It won’t be a full-time role, which he doesn’t want anyway, but his deal can work in a special attraction manner, just nowhere near as lucrative as the ones that Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker have. People, myself included, have stated that it would be awesome for Rusev and Lana to be cutting an anti-American promo only to have Angle’s music hit and have the crowd go batnuts crazy.
I would expect that Triple H would only consider bringing the near 46-year-old back if he could pass a couple months of drug/alcohol testing. That would be fair, because due to his history I wouldn’t trust him either.
Kurt Angle vs. Daniel Bryan could be spectacular. Another go-around between Angle and Lesnar would be sweet. Angle vs. Seth Rollins would be an interesting dynamic, and fans need to see Angle wrestle both Sheamus and Cesaro. It’s a shame that CM Punk isn’t around any longer, because that would be a dream match as well.
Bottom line, I believe the chances are slim for the time being. Come next spring/summer when they are getting ready for the release of WWE 2k16, that may be the perfect avenue on which to bring him back. Get him a few more matches, toss him in the WWE Hall of Fame and do a full career retrospective. Heck, try to get TNA to agree to using some of their stuff for the right price.
Yesterday (Sept. 24) was the eight-year anniversary of Angle’s debut in TNA via video package at the end of No Surrender 2006. Let’s get him an eighth year in WWE and then have him call it quits. In the end it’s a long shot, but it’s not a Hail Mary or a full-court shot. It’s a last-minute toss from half=court. That can be done, and at some point it probably will.
