On last week’s episode of Main Event on the WWE Network, Mark Henry came out to address the WWE Universe. He was wearing a suit, so you know he meant business. Last time he donned a suit, it was for his faux retirement, which just happened to be the best segment on Monday Night Raw in 2013. This time, however, it was another somber moment. It was an apology.
Henry was set to express regret not only to the WWE Universe, but to the United States of America. Henry could not beat the Russian brute Rusev at Night of Champions and he let America down. However, like his retirement segment, his apology took an unexpected turn. He went on to blame the fans for his loss and rant against America. He said Americans are too obsessed with winning, and they don’t care about hard work. Henry came off as sincere and bitter. What a great and unexpected heel turn! If story and character development like this happened on Main Event more often, people might be interested in getting the WWE Network!
But wait, here comes Big Show. He cracks some lame jokes, promises to beat Rusev on Smackdown and talks Henry off the heel turn ledge. Hopefully, this is some foreshadowing of what is to come with the Mark Henry character. An angry Mark Henry is an entertaining Mark Henry. An angry Mark Henry is main event worthy. Think back to the awesome Hall of Pain era. Fans believed he was a threat, and Henry is good enough to make us believe he is a threat whenever they allow him to be.
The aforementioned retirement segment turned into a Henry/John Cena WWE Championship match at Money in the Bank last year. It was Cena’s most entertaining title defense of that specific reign. Henry looked motivated and mean. Unfortunately, the feud proved to be something just for Cena to kill time. Henry was taken out of the title picture after the match.
There aren’t many established main event workers right now. Very few have the pedigree Henry has, and they can make him a title contender at a drop of the hat. Let Henry take his current bitterness and turn it toward Brock Lesnar. Lesnar needs a challenger to fill time between now and the Royal Rumble, and Henry can be that guy. He showed he can work the company’s main event style very well last year.
The feud with Lesnar already has background! Lesnar targeted Henry earlier this year and put him on the shelf for a few weeks. Henry never got any revenge after that so use it as a catalyst for a title match. These two could have a stiff title match and give Lesnar another big defense on his trek toward Wrestlemania 31.
Mark Henry is one of the more underutilized wrestlers on the roster. His days as an active worker are nearing an end, and I’d love to see him in one more main event before he has a legitimate retirement.
