Possible Way to Merge WWE’s Secondary Titles by Survivor Series

Internet wrestling fans love to fantasy book. They love to fantasy book so much, in fact, they often convince themselves what they create on forums and websites will become reality. A common theme among WWE fans, delusional or not, is merging the companies’ two secondary titles, the Intercontinental and United States Championships. At the very least, fans want those titles to feel important again.

Slowly, these titles are starting to feel fun again. Dolph Ziggler is proving to be a good fighting Intercontinental champion, having consistent and entertaining matches with Cesaro and The Miz. Sheamus, the United States champ, has a presence in the action by having a past feud with Cesaro. This mishmash of action could all lead to an interesting angle that allows WWE to merge the two secondary titles over the next few months.

At Hell in a Cell, Ziggler should defend against Cesaro. That appears to be the direction the company is going. Cesaro should pick up the victory and the title because frankly, he is due. Sheamus can defend successfully against The Miz. This allows Sheamus to get another defense under his relatively weak reign and the Miz and Damian Mizdow can go add to a poor tag team division. They’d fit in perfectly.

So now, we would have the belts on two wrestlers that have a long standing rivalry. This is where you can do something Vince McMahon despises, but would work wonders in this scenario — have Sheamus and Cesaro argue over who is the better champion. This can lead to a series of matches — best of five or best of seven — which would prove who the better champion is. It would be reminiscent of the very successful and enjoyable Booker T v. Chris Benoit series over the US Championship.

Monday Night Raw, Main Event and Smackdown give them more than enough time to have a long series like this; and it’s something that hasn’t been done in a long time. I trust Cesaro’s talent and diversity in the ring to make every match fresh. He has tremendous chemistry with Sheamus (whose in-ring work isn’t given enough credit) and I’ve enjoyed all their contests this year.

The blow off would come at Survivor Series and Match 7 could be some sort of gimmick match. They could just emphasize the secondary title as the “work rate” title, which it was known as for so many years. Creating a storyline that emphasizes pro wrestling and not “sports entertainment” is what the secondary titles need. Cesaro unifying the mid-card titles would rehabilitate his image after a poor summer. This is win-win for casual and “smart” fans.
