With rumors spreading that The Undertaker is leaning toward wrestling at WrestleMania 31, speculation has returned that Sting’s WWE debut is on the horizon. He could appear as soon as January. The next Sting vignette we’ll see won’t turn out to be a disappointing advertisement for the newest video game. My hope is actually that there are no vignettes for him. Instead of doing something like that 2.21.11 gimmick that was allegedly supposed to be for Sting and was made very vague intentionally because there was no deal in place yet, he should make a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble match. The Rumble PPV sells itself.

Sting’s debut, no matter where it happens, isn’t going to move the needle, as they say. Why not make it a big surprise? He’s not going to win, of course, so it should happen about halfway through the match. The clock counts down to zero but no music plays. Nobody comes out. The commentary team doesn’t know what to make of it, but after a few moments the match continues and they resume calling the action. Then suddenly, the arena goes completely dark. Thunder rumbles. “Seek & Destroy” (or a WWE-ized version of it) blares over the loudspeakers and then the arena lights up with Sting on the video screen and his own personalized LED screens.

It’s Sting!

The crowd goes wild, the wrestlers stand in shock, and he immediately eliminates a few scrubs. After that, we get back to the match. At some point he and Bray Wyatt can get into a standoff, which will set up what we should see as Sting’s WrestleMania match. In the end, it doesn’t really matter much. Sting isn’t going to be showing up as a regular on TV and he won’t be a long-term fixture. The importance is that his initial debut is memorable and that he does something fun at ‘Mania. Sting will be the featured inductee in the 2015 class of the WWE Hall of Fame, fans will enjoy his cup of coffee and that will be that.
