WWE Rumors: Dudley Boyz Returning Might Save Tag Team Division

Earlier in the year, I speculated that Team 3D, the former Dudley Boys, could return to the WWE. At the time, there were no reported talks between the two sides, but Devon was not under contract with TNA and Bully Ray’s deal was set to expire shortly after Bound For Glory. Well Bound For Glory has come and gone, and now Bully Ray is out of contract with TNA Impact Wrestling.

Recent news reports are now saying that there may have been talks between the WWE and both members of the Dudley Boyz to bring the team back to the place they called home beginning in 1999. The men were one of the tag teams (along with Edge and Christian and The Hardy Boyz) that revolutionized tag team wrestling with their out-of-control brawls, hardcore matches and, most historically significant, the ladder and TLC matches.

The WWE has had a couple of resurgences of the tag team division over the past year and a half or so, but the depth that they once had has begun to dissipate and we are back to the old formula of having one team of champions, one team of challengers and everybody else is stuck doing comedy or nothing at all.

If Bubba Ray and D’Von do return, they would be returning to a tag team division featuring three really good teams: The Usos, Gold and Stardust, and Luke Harper and Erick Rowan (provided they stay together). I would love to see the type of brawl The Dudley Boyz could have with Harper and Rowan; we already know the Usos can have great matches with pretty much anybody, especially when larger men are on the opposite side of the ring, and Bubba Ray’s reactions to the antics of Goldust and Stardust would be worth $9.99 alone.

Plus, now that they finally are no longer NXT Tag Team Champions, it seems like it is only a short matter of time before The Ascension make their way up the main roster permanently. There also have been rumors that the current champs, Kalisto and Sin Cara, may be called up sooner rather than later as well. Those six teams could make for a spectacular tag division.

Of course I’m not going to declare that there is another tag renaissance on the horizon, because I always end up wrong. That said, the possibility is there, the potential is huge, and the talent is ready. The Dudley Boyz would get some great reactions and would be perfect to put some young teams over, especially the Ascension.

Here’s hoping that we see a Dudleyz/WWE reunion sooner rather than later.
