Big Show vs. Mark Henry: The Feud WWE Fans Didn’t Ask For

This week’s episode of Monday Night Raw saw Mark Henry turn his back on his good friend and tag team partner The Big Show. While I won’t bother discussing why it makes zero sense for the two men to get a shot at the tag titles, I do want to discuss why this feud does not need to exist.

Mark Henry and The Big Show could make for a fine tag team. They didn’t mesh well teaming up against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan in a feud that went absolutely nowhere, and the quartet had a handful of pretty bad matches. Outside of those two, though, Show and Henry are both experienced veterans who would be able to put on good matches against tag teams of a lesser size.

Instead of running with that, they stopped the team cold and had both men spend a couple of months playing cheerleader for each other in losing singles efforts against Rusev.

That ended, and while I was really hoping to see Mark Henry turn on Big Show and join the evil Russians, it was just not to be. The fact that Henry was preparing to go heel and target Big Show was of course rather obvious, and they pulled the trigger on Monday in a horribly ham-handed manner.

What happens next? You guessed it: a match! Big Show and Mark Henry in a match! Against each other! In 2014! Probably on pay-per-view! Must we be subjected to such torture? I thought about it for a little while, and I don’t see any reason that would cause me to take the ‘wait and see’ approach in terms of the upcoming Show/Henry battle.

Neither man has ever moved very well, but have looked great in recent years because they have honed in on being the big thing that little things run into. As proven by the feud with Harper and Rowan, they aren’t very good at being the big things that big things run through, and that poses a problem.

Not only will the in-ring competition be a borefest, but how uninteresting is this feud set to be? Henry claimed that he just attacked Show before Show could attack him, and said that Big Show was always jealous of him. For what I do not know, but I would wager Henry has never been beaten in a donut-eating contest.

I was hoping that maybe the men could pair up and win the WWE Tag Team Championship, dominate for a bit, get beaten by a young team, then walk off into the sunset. Both men have been rumored to be nearing retirement for years, with Big Show even doing so for a while in 2007 until making his return in 2008 to defend Rey Mysterio from boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Who knows? Maybe they’ll surprise me. Even better, maybe they’ll both get themselves a smaller, faster tag partner and have some fun tag team battles. I guess we’ll find out sooner rather than later.
