Pro wrestling just isn’t the same without Jim Ross. The legendary announcer has been ‘retired’ from WWE for over a year now, and hasn’t called regular play-by-play in quite some time. This fact disappoints fans that watch WWE to this very day. JR made the product better, plain and simple.
The good part about JR no longer working for WWE is that he’s free to do what he wants. He runs his own brand now, including a podcast, a one-man show, columns for Fox Sports and occasional MMA and boxing play-by-play. Fans actually get a lot more JR than they have in a long time.
But that doesn’t mean they still don’t miss him at ringside calling the action in a 20 x 20 pro wrestling ring. After all, he’s undeniably the GOAT when it comes to wrestling play-by-play.
Well, JR fans across the globe have finally gotten their wish.
Thanks to all for their well wishes on my signing on to do play by play @njpw1972 Wrestle Kingdom 9 Jan. 4 in Tokyo Dome on PPV. #blessed

After weeks of speculation, it’s officially been announced that Ross will do play-by-play for Global Force Wrestling’s presentation of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 on January 4th.
This means a couple of things: (1) People who would have normally not given a thought to buy this PPV, will consider it solely because of JR. (2) The event just got a whole lot better.
JR is a talent enhancer. He makes you care about the action you’re watching. Even though many US fans will be unfamiliar with the GFW/NJPW product, Good Ol’ JR will have them caught up and caring about the wrestlers in the ring in no time.
What a smart move by Jeff Jarrett’s promotion. Now, fans will just have to hope that this isn’t a one-off situation.
