Survivor Series Must Have Big Future Implications

In a short few minutes, what is supposed to be WWE‘s premier event of the fall — a Thanksgiving classic, if you will — is set to kick off in St Louis. The main event ten-man elimination tag match has been built up to the point that at the end of the night the crowd will be at a fever pitch and a couple of announced lower card matches should produce good quality wrestling with some decent crowd investment.

Fans all hope to see the show blow expectations out of the water. I say it that way because there isn’t really a lot of hype heading into the show. WWE has been so busy telling fans that the show will be free and that WWE PPV is something special that must be witnessed that they may have forgotten about the most important part of that statement. The part in which they actually create an event that is as special as they are promising.

What has to be accomplished at the second longest running annual PPV event in the WWE lineup? Just as another one of Rant’s writers said earlier today, this show needs to be something special. Maybe more importantly, however, is the followup. Everyone wants to see an event with a number of good contests, but similar to the 1998 edition, there must be an important occurrence that leads to months of ongoing eventful rivalries that can culminate at WrestleMania.

The Rock went corporate at Survivor Series 1998 and went on to have a memorable feud with Mankind. It continued a longer term issue with Stone Cold Steve Austin with it all coming to A Ragin’ Climax at WrestleMania XV.

I have speculated that Sheamus will be turning heel and joining The Authority, but that won’t make a big enough splash, which in turn won’t produce a large enough wave for them to ride all the way to WrestleMania. If Roman Reigns had the charisma to pull it off, it would be an amazing swerve to have him align himself with Triple H and Co. What did being a rebel get him? A poor pair of opportunities at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship over the summer in multi-man matches and being continuously overlooked in favor of guys like John Cena and Randy Orton.

It’s tough to accurately predict what big company-changing event may occur (if any at all), but it may be imperative for the WWE Network to grow.
