The road to the road to WrestleMania is here. The countdown to the 2015 Royal Rumble has begun, and there are certainly a lot more questions than answers at this point.

John Cena is slated to challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE title, but the Rumble match itself (with the winner likely going on to face the winner of Cena and Lesnar) is wide open.

Here's a look at five early favorites to win the No. 1 contender spot:

Sheamus is the classic 'returning from injury dark horse' candidate to win this year's Rumble. It's unknown when the Celtic Warrior will return to the ring, but a surprise spot at the 2015 RR could be just the ticket. As for his chances of winning, they're not great, but better than most superstars'.

Ambrose is currently a candidate for any of WWE's top honors. He doesn't seem ready for the main event of WrestleMania, but there are certainly far worse choices. If nothing else, Ambrose figures to be in the Final Four this year.

3. Ryback

Many of you are currently rolling your eyes at the thought of Ryback winning the Royal Rumble. While it's definitely a terrible idea, there's also no doubt that he'll be on the short list of candidates. With the size to stack up against Lesnar, Ryback is one of the few realistic candidates left to take on The Beast. Still, don't count on The Big Guy winning his first Rumble this January.

2. Roman Reigns

After an incredibly strong showing in last year's Rumble, Reigns has already declared his intentions to win this year's event (minus one horrible promo botch). It would be very shocking if Reigns wasn't one of the last men standing in the 2015 Rumble -- but is he really ready to headline WrestleMania?

Orton has still yet to make his return to WWE after several weeks off. Fans initially predicted he'd be back for Survivor Series, and then TLC. But so far, no Viper. It's likely his return to TV will be held off until 2015, but fully expect him to be in the Rumble. Given this year's weak field, Orton should be a top favorite to win the whole thing. It's not out of the question to think a babyface Randy Orton could challenge Lesnar at WM 31.
