The writing has been on the wall for quite some time now. Despite an injury that put him on the shelf and concerns over his ability on the mic, it appears WWE is moving ahead with its plan to push Roman Reigns to the top.
According to a report from Wrestlezone via The Wrestling Observer, current plans call for Reigns to win the Royal Rumble in January. From there, Reigns will move on to the main event of WrestleMania 31 to compete for and win the WWE title (presumably from Brock Lesnar).
There have certainly been worse game plans in the history of WWE. For example, last year’s original WM plan to have Randy Orton and Batista headline.
But even though Reigns may eventually become the guy in wrestling, it’s very fair to ask if he’s ready for that spot. At the same time, if not Reigns — who? That’s the real issue. It’s hard to believe that WWE feels he is truly ready for the No. 1 spot, but it’s not like they have more than a couple of options to choose from.
Reigns may very well be the best option. But will fans stay interested?
In past eras it was much easier to book a guy to win the Rumble, move on to Mania and become the champ. In today’s era, where everybody already knows the plan (and may not agree with it) — will there be backlash? Will Reigns start to get booed and lose fans along the way?
It’s too early to say for sure. But if he continues to botch promos while hitting superman punch after superman punch, as good ol’ JR has said — this could easily become a ‘die, Rocky, die’ situation. It could also become a very boring road to the main event of WrestleMania 31.
