At the beginning of 2014, Seth Rollins would not have been on anybody’s radar as a Superstar of the Year candidate. Within just 12 months, though, he produced some of the most memorable moments, participated in many of the top matches, and served as the company’s top villain for an extended period of time. Subsequently, Rollins is undoubtedly the 2014 WWE Superstar of the Year.

Rollins entered 2014 as part of The Shield, perhaps the most impressive faction in recent memory. Through the first five months of the year, The Shield engaged in some of the top feuds in all of the WWE.

In February, they battled against the Wyatt Family in one of the most anticipated faction rivalries in wrestling history. The match delivered on the hype, and although Rollins and his Shield brethren came up short, it set the stage for them to turn into fan favorites.

Rollins excelled in that role, and really began to separate himself from Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose with his in-ring work. Wrestling as a face, Rollins was reminiscent of the daredevil Jeff Hardy. He further solidified his status in a series of matches against the reunited trio of Evolution.

Following The Shield’s triumph at Payback, though, Rollins would produce one of the top moments of the year when he shockingly turned his back on his teammates, joining Triple H and The Authority.

After a brief but impressive run as a fan favorite, Rollins reverted back to a villain, and immediately became one of the most hated individuals by the WWE Universe. Just weeks later, he captured the Money In The Bank briefcase, assuring himself of a future WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. When Rollins finally does decide to cash in, he has a great shot at winning the title.

Over the next few months, Rollins would battle his former teammates, Ambrose and Reigns. His rivalry with Ambrose led to a series of marquee matches, including the main event in October at the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view. After the departure of Randy Orton early in November, Rollins took over as the top workhorse in the company. He led Team Authority at the Survivor Series, and then did battle with John Cena one-on-one the following month.

Aside from Cena, Rollins was involved in more marquee matches than anyone in 2014. He showed his versatility as he accomplished the feat in tag team and singles action — as both a fan favorite and a villain. Through it all, he established himself as one of the very best competitors in the squared circle, and he vastly improved his abilities on the microphone as well.

With the array of departures and injuries among established stars, Rollins filled the void and shined brighter than anyone else on the roster. Cena, Orton, Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler all deserve consideration for Superstar of the Year, but ultimately, nobody delivered in more high-profile matches than Rollins.

Rollins repeatedly refers to himself as the future of the WWE, but he showed throughout the past year that the future is now.
