Rey Mysterio May Face The Undertaker At WrestleMania

There are a few things we know right now in regards to The Undertaker’s plans for WrestleMania. Braun Strowman is all but officially confirmed to not be the Dead Man’s foe at the big show. Kevin Owens apparently pushed to wrestle ‘Taker but was turned down. John Cena, as fast as he is progressing through rehab, is not likely to be back in time for an epic showdown.

Vince McMahon spoke on Wednesday about WWE‘s fourth quarter financial results and made an interesting statement regarding The Undertaker when questioned. McMahon stated that the opponent for his loyal employee will be somebody unexpected. A surprise, if you will. That puts a bunch of names into the conversation. Rumors are circulating that John Cena will indeed be healed in time to wrestle The Undertaker. That works, but would definitely be unexpected. Maybe they will go with Braun Strowman. That would surely be unexpected as well. Who else would fit that expectation?

Well, just about anybody, really. Kane would be overkill but if this is Undertaker’s last match (which it probably won’t be) then it would be something people might see coming. Other than him, a guy like Rusev would be a good fit and certainly unexpected. Sheamus has expressed interest in wrestling Undertaker, The Rock will be around and he doesn’t have anybody lined up either.

One possibility is Rey Mysterio. It’s being reported that friends are expressing Rey’s frustration with AAA, which is affiliated with Lucha Underground. The show’s third season is being filmed in March and it is unknown whether or not he will appear, but it seems unlikely. Even if he does show up for at least part of LU season 3 it won’t rule out a WWE return in time to set up a WrestleMania match with the Dead Man.

Mysterio is reportedly interested in working for WWE with a part time schedule. Vince McMahon may not be willing to pony up the kind of money the famous luchador might be looking for, but the contract dispute that led to his original departure isn’t likely to play a part, positively or negatively, in the negotiations.

Will WrestleMania see Rey Mysterio vs. The Undertaker? It is most certainly an unexpected matchup — nobody ever thought that those two men could realistically meet at WrestleMania, but this year it could happen. That would be a definite special attraction.
