Global Cruiserweight Series Is A Huge Opportunity For WWE And More

By Nicholas A. Marsico

The announcement was made earlier this week that WWE is set to bring a brand new show to the WWE Network this summer. Ever since the notion of a WWE Network became realistic people have been talking about an all cruiserweight show. There were rumors when the Network got its official release date that WWE was heavily considering bringing the cruiserweight division back as a network-only show but it never materialized. That is no longer the case, because this week’s announcement was that WWE was indeed set to hold a tournament featuring 32 of the best cruiserweight wrestlers from around the world.

We may see some guys from the main roster and NXT, but according to Triple H, he and William Regal (among others) have been scouting talent across the country and around the world. Specific independent companies have even been name-dropped, such as EVOLVE, which has had a highly publicized relationship recently with WWE, along with Progress Wrestling and Rev Pro.

Triple H has made it clear that this show is a multi-tiered effort. They are aiming to produce a quality weekly show, of course. While doing so they will be giving some wrestlers a higher profile that can help the independent promotions they work for. WWE also intends to scout talent as the tournament progresses.

It looks like this will be a hit on all of the marks. If it goes well this can lead to more specials, as well as relationships with more independent companies and more opportunities for wrestlers to grow their name value. The series will be taped at Full Sail University and begins airing on July 13.
