Dean Ambrose Can Beat Brock Lesnar At WrestleMania

By Nicholas A. Marsico

In just over two weeks, the match that many people would say is the main event in their hearts is set to take place when Dean Ambrose steps into the ring with Brock Lesnar. Ambrose himself made the challenge for the no holds barred street fight stipulation, to which Lesnar happily obliged. The common sentiment seems to be that Ambrose doesn’t stand a chance, but maybe that’s just what they want us to think.

Mick Foley made an appearance this week on WWE RAW, and in his words, passed the torch to Ambrose when he gifted (literally) Ambrose his barbed wire baseball bat to the new WWE king of the death match. That’s hyperbole of course, but Ambrose really does look to be poised to find himself in a role similar to what Foley did as Mankind and Dude Love from 1998 until his initial retirement in April 2000.

Is the “loveable loser” the right way to go with Ambrose? Even with the added attraction of his willingness to take a beating and penchant for happily returning the favor in as brutal a way possible, making him essentially a whipping boy would be beneficial for nobody. Getting manhandled by Brock Lesnar is one thing. That’s expected because even John Cena gets manhandled by Brock Lesnar. If the plan is to have him continue getting beaten up mercilessly and having to go to extreme measures to gain an advantage, that’s a disservice to the talent of Dean Ambrose and the fans who deserve better.

Losing to Lesnar at WrestleMania isn’t going to turn him into that character. It could be the first major match that starts that trend, but a valiant performance that sees Ambrose hold his own (even though he has to use mass weaponry) does not have to be the beginning of him taking abuse more than he partakes in competitive matches.

There hasn’t been much, if any, talk about the possibility of Ambrose actually winning on April 3. Why not? Sure, Lesnar defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania but that was two years ago. While Ambrose will come out of this match looking good whether he wins or loses, a victory over Lesnar does more good for him than a loss does damage to Lesnar.

The probability of an Ambrose victory is low — maybe a 25 percent chance at best. The crowd would treat a victory as a welcome surprise and be fully satisfied with the match as long as Brock throws him everywhere and the barbed wire bat comes into play. Ambrose will throw everything at Lesnar and The Beast will throw Ambrose at everything. Give Ambrose the win. That’s a WrestleMania moment.
