Baron Corbin Is Destined To Be U.S. Champion Soon

Last Sunday night, WWE gave us an unspectacular yet still very surprising debut in the form of Baron Corbin. He walked out to the ring with no fanfare along with the majority of the rest of the men in the match and was almost a non-entity during most of the battle royal. That didn’t stop him, however, from winning and earning the opportunity to stand next to the trophy and do his best Andre The Giant pose.

On Monday he made his RAW debut, taking out Dolph Ziggler while accepting the draw as both men got counted out. In the end, Corbin still came out on top and left Ziggler lying. He was short and directly to the point in his Smackdown debut on Thursday, proclaiming that the end of days is here. Thus far WWE is three-for-three with using Corbin on the main roster. Certain aspects could have been slightly better, but the necessary point was made.

I was honestly expecting to see him sooner rather than later as a new member of The Wyatt Family. He would have been the problem child because he has a mind of his own but for a short time, he would serve as a decent enough temporary replacement for the injured Luke Harper. This could still happen, but now that he no longer needs a way to get to the main roster it’s a long shot.

So who does he go after next? Well, it’s probable that his first one on one PPV match is going to be with Ziggler in a few weeks, but after that, it would not be surprising for him to make a beeline toward Kalisto and the United States Championship. He never got to hold that NXT gold and he surely would see Kalisto to be an easy target to go after in order to pick up some gold quickly in WWE. Ryback didn’t appear on TV this week, but you would expect he’s going to try to get one more shot at the title in the meantime so Kalisto has something to do before getting introduced to the End Of Days.

This is all leading to a match against Kane, though. Corbin eliminated him last to win the match in Dallas and Kane is still the gatekeeper for young big guys for some reason. I would love to see them build up Bubba Ray Dudley to play that role. Want to be relevant and not a nostalgia act? Do the Bully Ray thing. He can still team up with D-Von, but get him out of the stupid camouflage and let him speak his mind. But that’s another point for another time.

For now, let’s just hope that WWE knows what they are doing with Corbin. He could have used some more seasoning in NXT but there are plenty of amazing guys on the main roster that he can get more experience on a bigger stage. Corbin has the potential to make some significant improvement if he really has the drive to be great, and a move to the main roster may give him that boost of confidence or the chip on his shoulder to make him push himself up to the next level.
