Dr. Phil Was Shockingly One Of Best RAW Guests Ever

It was a bit of a head-scratcher last week when WWE announced that Dr. Phil was going to be on RAW in Los Angeles. What significance or relevance does a daytime advice talk show host have with the world of sweaty men and women in tights?

That might not be the best way to put it because his show is like Jerry Springer with the pretense of being educational and enlightening. It is akin to a less dignified Maury Povich. So maybe there is some experience with the aforementioned men and women.

Dr. Phil appeared on this week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, first showing up in a backstage segment with Ric Flair and Women’s Champion Charlotte. He sat ringside to watch the champ’s fantastic title defense against Natalya and was interviewed before and after the match.

It has to be noted that when it comes to celebrity guest spots, generally they come across as complete fools who know nothing about the product and are completely out of place. They are there to shill their stupid movie and WWE wants to use them to pretend that they have Hollywood relevance.

I’m not saying that guest stars have to be wrestling fans, but for the sake of Gorilla Monsoon at least spend half an hour getting familiar with the talent that you will be interacting with. Most of these people are actors who end up looking like they could be outperformed by middle schoolers who are only in drama because they want to meet girls.

There have been exceptions, the most obvious recent example being Arrow star Stephen Amell, who is a wrestling fan, a good actor and a good athlete as well. Hugh Jackman made a great appearance a few years ago and even though the dude is a gigantic movie star and also plays dignified roles on stage, he jumped into the performance 100 percent and threw a respectable punch, too.

Anyway, Dr. Phil. WWE didn’t just throw him into the ring and shoehorn him into a meaningless segment with wrestlers WWE doesn’t care about. He actually played a legitimate role in a legitimate angle and did a really good job. The guy isn’t an actor (and he came across a bit wooden, but not terribly so) but he didn’t miss a beat and delivered his lines effectively. Plus he totally schooled (or whatever the cool term is now) Flair in the backstage segment.

Most importantly, he made a very important point with respect to Charlotte and how she is behaving. It’s either going to get into her head and have her kick Papa Flair to the curb (but stay heel, of course) or it will motivate the rest of the women to finally do something about it and eliminate Ric themselves.

Yes, I know it’s a man again being placed into a storyline that should be about empowering the women, but that’s a muddled point to make. If a man fits into the women’s story, he should be able to participate just like women can in stories involving the men. It doesn’t devalue anybody.
